The Greenmount West community identified the former Sherman’s liquor store as a major blighting influence in the neighborhood. Above the problematic liquor store were two levels of vacant residential space. The property also included a three story vacant, formerly residential apartment building, facing Guilford Ave.
Through a community-engaged RFP process, a development partner, Shermans Home, a joint venture of Edgemont Builders and Healthy Planet, was selected to redevelop these properties.
The property facing Guilford Ave, now 225 Eareckson Place, was transformed into a gut-rehabbed gorgeous single family home. The former Sherman’s Liquor building, 226 E. Lafayette Ave became three beautiful residential apartments and a community resource. In the site of the former Sherman’s Liquor Store, Sherman’s Peace&Wellness Center now provides space for “therapists, healers, bodyworkers, dance instructors, breath-workers, life coaches, yoga teachers, mediators, peacemakers and community leaders".
However, this transformation would not have been possible without the participation of CBFF’s Acquisition Fund, along with the support of both the CBFF’s Loan Funds and the State of Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development State Revitalization Program CORE funds.
